Ignoring the writing rubric. Parents see a "3 out of 6" on writing and assume their kid can't write. Focus on the underlying skill — textual evidence, inference, mathematical reasoning — not the subject matter.
Skipping the science practice shift. Students who excel in traditional science classes often bomb Aspire science because they're used to recalling facts, not analyzing data. A single question might require reading a research summary, interpreting a table of results, identifying a flaw in methodology, and explaining how new evidence would affect a hypothesis. Aspire isn't designed to trick students. It's designed to reveal what they can do independently. The more familiar the experience, the clearer that signal becomes — and the better equipped teachers and counselors are to act on it.
In the end, Aspire works best when treated like what it is: a diagnostic tool, not a verdict.
